I’ve been asked, repeatedly, by my dear friend, yoga student and fantastic photographer Taryn Longo to get back to writing my blog. Specifically, what I’m eating, not eating and why, and cooking. Other students and friends often ask me what I’m doing in this arena, especially over the past five months, when I dropped a stubborn 15 pounds which creeped up over the past few years (if you never noticed the weight gain you’re not alone, I was in denial myself!) My energy is great and my yoga practice has opened up in a new way, so this way of eating is not about dropping weight, but rather it’s about nourishing yourself. I’ll write more about this in the future.

I’m grateful to all of my teachers and acknowledge the recipes and wisdom I’ve gleaned from Cate Stillman, Kyle Nuse, Donna Sonkin, Alejandro Junger’s Clean Program and Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Diet. I often tweak the recipes, rarely use exact measurements and tend to use what I have around the kitchen, so what you’re getting here is my own interpretation of what I’ve learned from them.

Tuesday morning, before practicing yoga outside on the beautiful Christopher street pier, which we do every Tuesday at 9 if you care to join us, I mixed a handful of farmer’s market organic spinach, farmer’s market crispin apple, tablespoon of organic tahini, two organic dates and two cups of water together and mixed in the vitamix. Drank half of that at 8:15.
Felt great, enjoyed yoga, and when I got home at noon added to the second serving, 1/2 very ripe banana I’d frozen, organic blueberries from the farmer’s market, scoop of organic trader joes hemp protein powder (I won’t be buying that again as I prefer to use the hemp seeds themselves, plus it has added sugar, which is totally unnecessary, but I’m trying to finish it) The second smoothie is a little richer and really satisfying
Then had a spoonful of Nutiva organic coconut manna mixed with raw cacao powder for a little sweet treat. Yum.
The Coconut Manna is amazing and can be purchased at Elm Health on 7th Avenue between 14th and 13th or online at Nutiva.com.
